Keidanren Voluntary Action Plan on the Environment
1. Industrial waste
(1) Target
- Unified target for Japanese industry (reduction of final waste disposal)
The annual amount of industrial waste for final disposal, which was 4,400 tons in fiscal 1990, shall be decreased to 600 tons or less in fiscal 2010.- Target for the gas industry
The annual amount of industrial waste produced by the gas industry, which was 19,000 tons in fiscal 1990, shall be decreased to 1,900 tons or less in fiscal 2010.
(2) Achievement
As a result of promoting the 3Rs (reduction, reuse and recycling), the annual amount of industrial waste for final disposal, which was 4,400 tons in fiscal 1990, was reduced to 100 tons in fiscal 2008. The annual amount of industrial waste produced by the gas industry, which was 19,000 tons in fiscal 1990, was reduced to 1,000 tons in fiscal 2008.

(3) Implemented measures
- Reducing the amount of waste production by expanding the use of LNG
- Expanding the use of sludge as a construction material, raw material for cement, etc.
- Improving the recycling ratio for waste plastic, debris, etc., by promoting sorted disposal
