2. Other targets specifically chosen by the gas industry
2-1 Reduction and recycling of soil excavated during gas pipeline works
(1) Target
By fiscal 2010, we shall achieve a 35% reduction in the amount of soil excavated during gas pipeline works (in comparison with the amount of soil that would be excavated with conventional work methods), and 70% or more recycling of excavated soil.
(2) Achievement
In fiscal 2008, we achieved a 37% reduction in the amount of excavated soil, and 71% recycling ratio of excavated soil.
(3) Implemented measures
- Decreasing the amount of excavated soil by promoting the use of shallow-pipe installation and non-excavation method
- Improving the recycling ratio by expanding the use of quality-enhanced recycled soil and recycled backfill material, and also use of the direct backfill technique
- Consultations with road administrators for obtaining permission to reuse excavated soil and recycled material (e.g. recycled roadbed material) as backfill material
2-2 Reduction and recycling of municipal solid waste from offices
(1) Target
By fiscal 2010, we shall achieve a 50% reduction (from the fiscal 1990 level) in the amount of general waste from offices of the gas industry, and increase the recycling ratio to 60% or more.
(2) Achievement
In fiscal 2008, we achieved a 68% reduction in the amount of general waste from our offices, and increased the recycling ratio to 81%.
Note: The figures refer to achievements made by four major gas companies (Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Toho Gas and Saibu Gas).
(3) Implemented measures
- Reinforcing efforts toward the 3Rs by setting targets using ISO, incorporating the targets into performance evaluations, and developing specific environmental activities
- Enhancing recycling by reducing paper waste through office automation and introduction of garbage disposers
