OUTLINE OF THE JAPAN GAS ASSOCIATION
2009

The Japan Gas Association (JGA) is an organization consisting of city gas utilities that aim at the sound development of the city gas industry and contributing to the promotion of the industrial development and cultural advancement of Japan as well. Established in October 1947, and then incorporated in June 1952 as a corporate association, JGA has a regular membership of 211 city gas utilities and an associate membership of about 270 companies and businesses closely involved with the gas business as of July 2009.
In 2008, the city gas industry in Japan about 34.5 billion cubic meters of gas (41,8605MJ/m3 conversion) to about 28.60 million customers, thus occupying a crucial position as an energy supply industry accommodating a wide range of demands from household, air conditioning and industrial sector.
Our association works actively on behalf of city gas utilities to promote the introduction of natural gas, standardize the use of high-calorie natural gas, diffuse high-efficiency gas application systems, promote the use of gas air conditioning systems and natural gas vehicles, develop gas utilization technologies, improve customer safety, work on public relations, and foster international cooperation. Moreover, the progress of liberalization in Japanese energy market has led to increasingly tough inter-energy competition. Amidst this, we in the gas industry have to sustain our efforts in order to encourage customers to keep on making city gas their energy choice.
As natural gas is important energy for Japan, we are striving to increase its use and further develop natural gas technologies. Through these efforts, JGA will continue to support the priorities of Japan‘Ηs energy policy objectives: efficient use of energy and reduction of impact on the environment.
